Campus = BailriggPendle College is one of the constituent colleges of the
University of Lancaster . Founded in1974 , the college is named after thePendle region of the east ofLancashire which is dominated byPendle Hill . The term ‘Pendle’ is associated with a great deal of fantasy and legend. Although named after the magnificent Pendle Hill, the area is perhaps more well- known for its association with the infamousPendle Witches . The original college buildings were designed in part by Marcus Merriman and used to house the visual arts department and the Peter Scott Gallery.Pendle College is well known for it's strong college spirit and identity and all members are encouraged to take part in or support college activities. Being one of the larger colleges on campus there is a wide and diverse range of characters in Pendle; one for everyone.
Accommodation
When the college moved to its current location at the far South end of campus in
1993 and the original college buildings became part ofGrizedale College , its rooms were considered the best on campus until the new blocks in Alexandra Park were completed in 2004. Many still regard the standard rooms to be preferable to more expensive en-suite rooms. The college has additional accommodation in the nearby Alexandra Park buildings in blocks 24-29 (Winewall ,Higherford , Fence, Crowtrees &Brierfield ) including a block of studios in block 29 (Barnoldswick ) where students have a self contained studio and pay around £95 a week for this high quality accommodation; being the most expensive on campus. The en-suite blocks situated in Alexandra Park, are commonly referred to as "Posh Pendle" and subsequently the standard accommodation (surrounding Pendle Bar) are referred to as "Ghetto Pendle" or "The Ghetto". Both the standard and en-suite accommodation in Pendle surround a landscaped quad where students can relax on a sunny day.
Facilities
Pendle has the tallest bar and
JCR lounge on campus as it is two stories high, featuring a balcony overlooking the quad. Pendle bar also has the best acoustics of all the bars on Campus and is home to LULUMS every Saturday during term time. Pendle college also has a small laundrette, computer lab and secure bike sheds.Symbols
The college crest depicts a lion (representing the Norman lords of the area, the
de Lacy ’s) standing on top of Pendle Hill with a witches broom. The Latin motto "Altiora sequamor" means "Seek to climb to the top." The Junior Common Room College logo is a black witch on a full moon. The Pendle JCR motto is "Venue of Legends". The college colours are dark green, yellow and black.Governance
The College is established under the Statutes of the University. Internally, the key committee which runs the College is the "College Syndicate".
