Xinmin Secondary was not opened under any normal circumstances. Its first opening in November 1945 marked the time when Singapore was freed from the Japanese [60th anniversary magazine- A Tree’s Tale 历史走廊 The Xinmin Story Script] . It was a time of uncertainty and when Singapore had to pick itself up. Xinmin, or rather on that time, was called Sin Min High School, was not just a new school, but was an uprising achiever, resilient against challenges, and a hope for education needs.
The school has made remarkable achievements over the years under the capable leaderships of various principals such as Mr Goh Tong Pak, now the Deputy Director (Schools Appraisal) with the Ministry of Education [Organisation Chart of the Ministry of Education Schools Division, http://www.moe.gov.sg/schdiv/school_new.htm, Accessed October 2007] , Mr Lee Hak Boon, now the Principal of
Catholic High School [School Information Service - Catholic High School, http://app.sis.moe.gov.sg/schinfo/SIS_SearchDtls.asp?strCode=7102, Accessed October 2007] , and Mrs Low Ay Nar, now the Principal ofSingapore Chinese Girls' School [School Information Service - Singapore Chinese Girls' School, http://app.sis.moe.gov.sg/schinfo/SIS_SearchDtls.asp?strCode=5026, Accessed October 2007] .In particular, Mr Goh Tong Pak led the school to be among the top 20 Value-Added Schools in Singapore from 1992 to 1997, paving the way for even greater achievements in time to come [Xinmin Secondary School - Brief History, http://www.xinminss.moe.edu.sg:1285/main/history.aspx#2000, Accessed October 2007] . Under the leadership of Mr Lee Hak Boon, the school attained autonomous status from the Ministry of Education with effect from 2001, in recognition of the school's proven academic track record and its reputation in the neighbourhood [Press Release on Xinmin's Autonomous Status, http://www.moe.gov.sg/press/2000/pr19072000.htm, Accessed October 2007] .
In the same year, the school was accorded the Singapore Quality Class accreditation, the first of many of its more significant achievements [List of Singapore Quality Class Companies, http://www.spring.gov.sg/Content/WebPage.aspx?id=cb7be315-38c2-4c84-9307-cf53c7e02171, Accessed October 2007] .
From being a neighbourhood school attracting students with
Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) aggregate scores of around 191 in 1994, the school has come a long way in providing quality education for its students, being now a recipient of the School Excellence Award, the most prestigious award a school can ever receive from the Singapore Ministry of Education [Ministry of Education Masterplan of Awards, http://www.moe.edu.sg/esp/schadm/sec1/Masterplan_of_Awards.pdf, Accessed October 2007] . Today, it attracts students with PSLE aggregate scores of around 245 (as of 2007) to its Express stream [Xinmin Secondary Achool Admission Statistics, http://www.xinminss.moe.edu.sg:1285/main/t_score.aspx, Accessed October 2007] .Recent Achievements
