Club career
Sunderland
Smith made his Sunderland debut in the Carling Cup second round against Cheltenham Town, in which he was sent off, receiving two bookings. He is notoriously remembered for a violent and dangerous late tackle on Arsenal's Abou Diaby in a Premier League match, where the Arsenal player received a severe double break to his leg and a dislocated ankle, was initially out of action for eight months and has persistently suffered with related injuries ever since, leaving many to rue the talent that has gone to waste as a result.
He would only make five appearances for the first team during the 2005/06 season and was then allowed to move on a two month loan to Huddersfield Town in 2006.
Aberdeen
Smith moved to Aberdeen on 11 August 2006 from Sunderland despite having signed a 4 year deal with the club just 2 months previous. He made his debut appearance in the Dons' 1-1 draw against fellow Premier League side St Mirren. After making just 13 appearances for the Dons, he was released in the summer of 2008. After a trial spell at Darlington, Smith turned out as a trialist for First Division St Johnstone in their match against Morton on 9 August 2008.[1]
Following that match, Saints manager Derek McInnes confirmed Smith would train with the squad for a week [2] but that there was no guarantee of a contract as the club had an offer in for another player, Finnish international Tuomo Könönen. [3]
Gateshead
Smith moved to Conference North side Gateshead on 20 November 2008[4] making 10 starts and 2 substitute appearances.[5] Smith was released by Gateshead at the end of the 2008–09 season.[6]
Blyth Spartans
On 6 March 2010, he signed for Blyth Spartans.
