Norsel Point

Norsel Point

Norsel Point is a rocky point on the northwest side of Arthur Harbor, on the west end of Amsler Island in the Palmer Archipelago. Norsel Point is located at 64°46′S 64°06′W / 64.767°S 64.1°W / -64.767; -64.1. Norsel Point was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1955. Norsel Point was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-names Committee (UK-APC) for the Norwegian sealing vessel Norsel, which was chartered by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) for the 1954-1955 summer season to establish the station at Arthur Harbor. Norsel Point was originally considered part of Anvers Island because the gap between Anvers Island and what is now called Amsler Island was covered by the Marr Ice Piedmont. Rapid recession of the ice revealed the separate island in 2004. The United States Board on Geographic Names named the new island in 2007 but retained the name Norsel Point for the island's western point.
