Stillwater, Oklahoma , numbers 4,600 active members in over 180 active chapters, and over 45,000 alumni. Since 1947, Kappa Kappa Psi has recognizedTau Beta Sigma as "an equal affiliated organization with a parallel purpose, function and role in the college and university band setting," and the two organizations hold joint conventions.History
Kappa Kappa Psi was founded on
November 27 ,1919 by ten members of the Oklahoma A & M College (later to be known as theOklahoma State University ) Band, led by William Alexander Scroggs and the band director and mentor,Bohumil Makovsky . The other founding members were A. Frank Martin, Raymond D. Shannon, Clyde Haston, Clayton E. Soule, Carl A. Stevens, William H. Coppedge, Dick Hurst, Asher Hendrickson, and Iron Hawthorne Nelson. Kappa Kappa Psi was for many years an exclusively male fraternity, thoughTitle IX led the organization to become co-ed in the late 1970s.Kappa Kappa Psi has grown tremendously in the past ten years, doubling in membership as well as number of chapters.
Ties to other organizations
In addition to the close relationship with
Tau Beta Sigma , Kappa Kappa Psi has historical and current relationships with several other organizations.
* Five of the ten Kappa Kappa Psi founders were members ofLambda Chi Alpha .cite web|url=http://www.crossandcrescent.com/2007/02/founders-of-kappa-kappa-psi/|title=Founders of Kappa Kappa Psi|publisher=Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity|date=2007-02|accessdate=2007-04-02]
* One of Kappa Kappa Psi's founding fathers (Raymond Shannon) was a member ofPhi Mu Alpha Sinfonia cite web|url=http://www.kkpsi.org/founders.asp|title=Founding Fathers|publisher=Kappa Kappa Psi|accessdate=2007-08-20] , and Kappa Kappa Psi has had varied relationships with that fraternity. At some schools, conflicts have occurred between chapters of the two fraternities, as they recruit from and attempt to serve similar (though not identical) groups. In 2005, multiple joint statements were issued by the leadership of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, along with Tau Beta Sigma andSigma Alpha Iota , affirming "that there are equally important roles for Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Sigma Alpha Iota, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma to fulfill on any campus where our chapters mutually exist, now or in the future. Each organization possesses a distinct mission and, as a result, fulfills a unique and vital role in the musical environment of a college campus" and that "A member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia or Sigma Alpha Iota can hold simultaneous membership in Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma, subject to his/her own interests and the eligibility requirements of the other organizations. The same holds true for a member of Kappa Kappa Psi or Tau Beta Sigma with regard to membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia or Sigma Alpha Iota."cite web|url=http://www.orgs.okstate.edu/kkp/generalinfo.htm|title=Joint Statements of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and of Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Sigma Alpha Iota, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia|publisher=Alpha Chapter, Kappa Kappa Psi|accessdate=2007-04-02]Districts

All national officers serve a two year term, from the close of one national convention to the close of the next. The National Vice President for Professional Relations is appointed by the new National President, the National Vice President for Colonization and Membership assumes the presidency upon approval by a simple majority vote, and all other officers are elected at the convention. Generally National Officers do not serve successive terms in the same position, although there is no rule against this.
