Computational epidemiology is a multidisciplinary field utilizing techniques from computer science, mathematics, geographic information science and public health to develop tools and models to aid epidemiologists in their study of the spread of diseases. It differs from bioinformatics in that it is centered more around studying how diseases spread, and not the actual disease itself.
Recently, the University of North Texas founded the Center for Computational Epidemiology and Response Analysis (CeCERA) as a collaboration of faculty from the fields of Computer Science, Public Health, Medical Geography, and Geographic Information Science.[citation needed]
