Telemundo affiliate serving the Boston market, licensed toMerrimack, New Hampshire . The station is owned byNBC Universal , but is controlled byZGS Communications as a full-power relay ofWTMU-LP , primarily serving Boston's northern suburbs and southernNew Hampshire .History
WNEU signed on in 1987 as WGOT, an
independent station . The call sign was derived from the so-called "Golden Triangle" of Manchester, Nashua, andSalem, New Hampshire . For a time, the station aired a 10:00 p.m. newscast anchored by current NHDOT spokesperson Bill Boynton.Paxson Communications purchased the station in the 1990s, and switched WGOT to a mix ofinfomercials and religion, similar to their other stations. In 1998, the station changed itscall sign to WPXB in preparation for the launch of the Pax TV network, but it ceased to carry Pax programming in 1999 after Paxson acquired WABU (now WBPX), due to conflicts in the immediate Boston area with WABU, and inNew Hampshire itself with WNBU (now WPXG). After a brief return to infomercials, the station switched to ValueVision, which later becameShopNBC .NBC acquired the station from Paxson in 2002 and changed the call sign to WNEU, eventually dropping ShopNBC forTelemundo , via a simulcast of ZGS Broadcasting'sWTMU-LP (which continues to this day).During its Paxson ownership, WGOT/WPXB owned a translator in
Boston, Massachusetts , W40BO, which was previously W33AV, WRAP-LP, W54AT, and W54CN. When NBC purchased channel 60, Paxson retained W40BO, which has now changed to a translator ofWBPX .See also
