Ehrenfeld was involved in an international legal controversy when she lost a
libel case brought in the EnglishHigh Court of Justice by Saudi businessmanKhalid bin Mahfouz concerning her book "Funding Evil ". She pre-emptively counter-sued bin Mahfouz to obtain a declaration that the judgment would not be enforced in the United States and that her book was not defamatory under US law, but her lawsuit was dismissed by the New York courts on the grounds of a lack of personal jurisdiction over bin Mahfouz. In response to this and similar incidents, NYS's legislature passed, and on May-01-2008 Gov. Paterson signed, a law which "offers New Yorkers greater protection against libel judgments in countries whose laws are inconsistent with the freedom of speech granted by the United States Constitution."
