- Sellers International Band
The Sellers International Band is a
brass band from Chapel Hill inHuddersfield ,West Yorkshire in the UK, sometimes known as the Sellers Engineering Band.History
It was formed in January 1986 by Phillip McCann as Huddersfield Tecol Band. It changed to Sellers College Brass in November 1987, then the Sellers Engineering Band.
Sellers went all Pe'Tong in late 2007 when Mr Armitage, band sponsor from Sellers International decided to withdraw the sponsorship. In all honesty, he did this in early 2007 but failed to mention it to anyone. This was obviously a winning decision with all involved and many a kind word has since been uttered in the bands new home, 'The Rat'.
Sellers is now in the process of becoming the world's best-equipped youth band.
The last concert was on
26 January 2008 .RIP Sellers BandSellers bands rise and fall continued to amaze onlookers in June 2008 as they advertised on the world's largest brass band website (www.4barsrest.co.uk) for the return of a Soprano cornet which was uniquely overhauled for the band. Such management was (until this point) merely folk law, however this admission of ridiculousness finally sent the brass band world into a spiral of hilarity.
On the plus side, the bands old uniforms are being offered for free to lower section bands who are in need. Who gets these jackets will be a lottery, however the Camelottteryfundshire Brass Band are said to be on the look out.
CD's of the farewell concert were made available courtesy of the RIP Blue Ties association, with all proceeds going to charity (not Sellers, another one).
BREAKING NEWS - JULY 2008 The uniform Lottery has been won and as hoped by Sellers founding father Mr Armitage, they have gone to a lower section band. Unfortunately for all the deserving village bands across the UK they have gone to a band not in a hierarchical lower section but most definitely geographically lower.
Brisbane Excelsior have pulled off a real coup and the jackets will be heading to Australia, meaning XLCR have saved enough money to keep flying in players from around the world whenever needed. The local village bands, performing at fetes and garden parties to fund their very existence are said to be disappointed but not overly suprised.
Rumours of the 'D.U.A (Make Me Mayor) Band' are at this time completely unfounded
Personnel
The band has within its ranks one of the best and most respected players in the
brass band movement, David Root on Eb Tenor Horn, whose playing has brought him admiration from fans and supporters all over the world, as far away asChad in Africa. David's latest solo CD where he is accompanied by the band features many popular Tenor Horn solos includingSolo Seconda and Born Free (with standard top C split). It has made recordings with theHuddersfield Choral Society .Youth Band
The youth band was formed when a lottery grant meant that David Armitage had a surplus of instruments to form a new band. Even better news was to follow when they new instruments bought for the senior band found their way to the youth band following the untimely demise of Sellers International Band. The youth band (arguably the most well equipped in Western history) has gone from strength to strength. In 2008, they came 3rd at Blackpool entertainment festival and later that year, they came 3rd in the youth championships. Unfortunately for all involved they have also inherited the tartan waistcoats vacated by the senior band and now look a bit like the Scottish Children's Band but with better instruments and percussion kit. The band's principal cornet also plays with Grimethorpe band! The band are always on the hunt for new players - information can be found on the band's homepage. (See below)
