Martin Heilwig (1516-1574) was a
cartographer fromSilesia . He was born in Neisse and died inBreslau ,Holy Roman Empire . (While his region has had strong ties to both the German and Polish cultures and political histories, his name and affiliations were strongly German.)He was a student of
Martin Luther andPhilip Melanchthon .In 1561 he
copper -etched a map, a single-sheetcartouche of Silesia, which he published under the title "Silesiae Typus" and dedicated toNicolaus Rhedinger . His map was later republished in several versions ofAbraham Ortelius 's pioneering world atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum ".External links
