Madson graduated from Valley View High School (
Riverside County ) with a 3.5 GPA in by|1998. His uncle,Steve Barr , was in theBoston Red Sox and Texas Rangers systems from by|1969-by|1975. He was drafted by the Phillies in the 9th round (254th overall) of the by|1998 amateur entry draft, the same year as fellow teammatePat Burrell .Pro career
Highly regarded by the Phillies ever since they drafted him, Madson got to the major league level in by|2004 as a
relief pitcher . In by|2005, he started out well but appeared to wear down late in the season, finishing with a 4.14earned run average in 87 innings.The Phillies had high hopes for Madson in by|2006, when they converted him back to a starter, which he played for his entire minor league career, but has since been put back in the bullpen to make room for the
