William T. Mahone Jr.

William T. Mahone Jr.

William Mahone Jr., also known as Master Willie Mahone, (December 31, 1856-September 20, 1927) was a businessman and government official. He did not have a middle name; the middle initial T. on the title line is an error.

He was the son of Otelia (née Butler) Mahone and Confederate General and United States Senator William Mahone. The eldest of only 3 surviving children (of 13 born), he was born in Norfolk, Virginia while his father was constructing the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, and attended school at Hanover Academy.

William Mahone Jr. was engaged in the tobacco trade for a time and later served as collector of customs at Petersburg, Virginia.

His wife was Mary Ann (née Tannor) Mahone (1857-1930). They had 6 children, of whom 4 (3 boys and a girl) survived infancy. They were William Mahone III, born in 1882, Gilbert Leigh Mahone, born July 28, 1887, who died November 20, 1900, Marion Mahone, born in 1889, and Marie E. Mahone, born in 1892. William Mahone Jr. and his wife were interred at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg.
