Carnwadric

Carnwadric is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde. Carnwadric was a farm owned by Sir John Maxwell. One of approximately 7 such large holdings owned by him and rented to others. The land was formerly land owned by the Stuart Kings and Queens of Scotland. During ancient post Roman times, it was sought after by the Scots of Dalriada and Angles of the East. It formed part of the Ancient kingdom of Strathclyde and the language used was brythonic celt(Welsh) and not goidilic celt(Irish Scots).

Govan, an ancient village nearby and now also part of Glasgow, is rumoured to be named after "Gawain" one of King Arthur's knights.Pollokshaws and Thornliebank are the nearest ancient villages and were created mainly because of the textile industry. Manufacturing and printing of cloth were the main industries and formed the livelihoods of many of the villagers. Several immigrants came to the area to work in the industry. Irish linen workers, as well as Dutch workers (specialized in beetling) a form of transfer printing. Adjoining Arden;the houses in Carnwadric are older and sturdier and have needed refurbishment also the same as other post war housing "schemes".

Adjoining the exterior of the former Sir Alexander Crum's Talaco Mill. later a former Prisoner of War Camp's west side, used during the second world war: Carnwadric boasts two schools, one non-denominational, (Carnwadric Primary) and one Catholic, St. Vincent de Paul Primary as well as a once state of the art public playground named King George V Park(opened by the Princess Elizabeth in 1950-now Queen Elizabeth) Its retail area is in need of refurbishment and investment to return it to its 40s and 50s state.Carnwadric has much sturdier houses than those found in later 1950s social housing and are mostly brick and masonry.

Carwardric's border runs along Boydstone Rd(Inc Boydstone Pl) to the bridge at Kennishead.left up Carnwardric rd til it runs onto Lochiel Rd where houses on the left are in Glasgow while those on the right are in East Renfrewshire.Once along Lochiel Rd come up Clova St,taking a right along Bangorshill St going down Thornliebank Rd til the border joins Boydstone Rd again.Streets in Carnwardric are:-Boydstone Rd,Boydstone Place,Cruachan St,Clova St,Bangorshill St,Kiloran St,Drumpark St,Capelrig St,Stanalane St,Ardconnel St,Waulkmill St,Roukenburn St,Hopeman Rd,Crebar St,Dryad St,Cona St,Carnwardric Rd And Harport St.

Carnwardric commenced building in 1927

King George V playing fields were opened by the Queen(then princess Elizabeth) in 1950.Part of the park was sold of to Beezer homes for access to their development at 'Regent's Park which commenced in 1995
