The Girl Who Was... Death is an album by the rock group Devil Doll. It's official release was March 4th, 1989, but there was pre-release of cassette tapes in December 1988. This would be the second album by Devil Doll but their first album to release to the public (the groups first release, The Mark of the Beast was only pressed into one copy, to be owned by the leading band member, Mr. Doctor). The album is completely written by Mr. Doctor and is based on the television series by Patrick McGoohan called The Prisoner. The first edition of the album was pressed into 500 copies, but only 150 would survive Mr. Doctors strange artistic vision. The 150 copies were handed out after a live performance of the song/album and the remaining 350 LP's were burned by Mr. Doctor after the show. In each album handed out, was a unique inlay written by Mr. Doctor personally (some even in his own blood). The album would later be released under several different editions throughout the years (most notably by the bands official fanclub, the now one and only source to getting any of the bands material).

Music style

Like all but two Devil Doll albums (one of these, only one track split into separate tracks), The Girl Who Was... Death contains only one track: the title track. Being at an easily referenced length of 66 minutes and 6 seconds long, the song goes through many different themes and melodies, keeping strong to the bands progressive attributes. With the stunning use of violins and the metal influenced playing of guitar and drums flow beautifully with the awkward yet undeniably artistic and unique vocal performance by Mr. Doctor, the album travels through several compelling emotions with eerie tones and metaphoric lyrics. After little under 40 minutes into the song, the music ceases and the silence continues for the rest of the track's length. Excluding the very end, which features the band's cover of the main theme from the television series the album is based on, The Prisoner. There are also some variations that are featured on other editions of the album, that occur during the 20 minute silence and outro.

This album would begin the explosive cult following of Devil Doll fans. And Devil Doll would continue to release several more albums in The Girl Who Was... Death's styling throughout the 90's.
