The Alameda, San José, California

:The Alameda "redirects here. For other uses of the word, see Alameda."The Alameda is a busy and historic street in San Jose and Santa Clara California. Except for the last few blocks of The Alameda on the Santa Clara end, the road is signed as a part of State Route 82.

The road was built in the late 1700s by Native American neophytes at Mission Santa Clara de Asís to link the mission with "El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe". The residents of the town used the tree-lined path to attend Sunday Mass at the mission chapel prior to the construction of St. Joseph's Church.

The Alameda is a part of the longer and more well known body El Camino Real to the north and continues to the east as Santa Clara Street through Downtown San Jose. The Rose Garden neighborhood lies to the west of The Alameda and the College Park neighborhood to the east. The Alameda, which now runs from Santa Clara University to the HP Pavilion, contains a number of gay-owned businesses and the Billy DeFrank Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.
