Anne Leaton (born
July 13 1932 ) is anovelist ,short story writer, andpoet whose works have been published inEngland and America and whose radio plays have been broadcast on theBBC . Born inCleburne, Texas , she studied English andcreative writing at Indiana University andTexas Tech University and was aFulbright scholar toGermany , after which she spent twenty years traveling and working inEurope , theMiddle East ,South Africa , andCanada . Her major works include the novels "Good Friends, Just" (1983), "Pearl" (1985), "Blackbird, Bye, Bye" (1989), and the collection of short stories, "Mayakovsky, My Love" (1984). She has received numerous awards for her fiction and poetry, including twice being the recipient of anO. Henry Award for her short stories. She also has contributed essays to a number of collections, including "Mothers and Daughters" edited by Joanna Goldsworthy and published byVirago Press in 1995. Leaton's work has been compared to other writers whose focus has been primarily upon social mores and human foibles--specifically such novelists and short story writers asJane Austen ,Henry James , andJohn Cheever .References
