North West Secondary School

North West Secondary School is a secondary school in Mabaruma, in the Barima-Waini region in northern Guyana. It was established in 1965, and was the only secondary school in the region until Santa Rosa school was set up in 1992. Students from all different areas enters this school each year. There are classes from one to five. It is mainly located at Bromes Esturn (Mabaruma Compound), this school has a dormitory. This school was run by a Head master/mistress until 2005 when it was changed to be run by a school board. This school takes part in lot of sports activities. Students entering this school has to have at least 350 marks at their Secondary School Entrance Examinations(SSEE). This school has a population of an average of 600 or over of students. It performed its best in the year 2005 where it produced more than 75% passes at the cxc exams.The top student for the school was Lhee-Rand Bishop Castello who is presently studying medicine in Cuba. He obtained eight passes with seven grades 2.The performance continued to rise during the years, there were students than graduated with as much as 10 subjects including grades 1 and 2 passes.The school motto is "Together we can build".The school has been under a lot of renevation and has been expanded to accommodate its growing population of students. The school had made a lot of progress in the last few years despite the shortage of teachers and for this reason many students do not accept this school so they take transfer to go to schools in Georgetown.
