WFXI debuted in November 1989 as the first station in the area not to be affiliated "Big Three" networks. WFXI must conform its signal to protect
WRIC-TV in Richmond, so its signal only reaches New Bern, Jacksonville and the southern and eastern portions of the market. As a condition of getting the Fox affiliation for the market, it had to sign on WYDO to cover the rest of the market. WYDO debuted onJune 30 ,1992 .The station recently changed its on-air name to FOX Eastern Carolina after many years of being known as Fox 8/Fox 14. WFXI's digital signal is broadcast on UHF channel 24, while WYDO's digital signal is broadcast on UHF channel 21.
On November 6, 2007, it was announced that the FCC approved sale of certain WFXI/WYDO assets from
Piedmont Television toBonten Media Group , the owners of local ABC affiliateWCTI-TV . [http://www.tvnewsday.com/articles/2007/11/06/daily.10/]WFXI/WYDO's 10pm nightly newscast was produced by
WNCT-TV until December 2007. In January 2008, after Bonten took over operation of the station, "FOX News at Ten" was replaced by a rebroadcast of WCTI's 6pm newscast. The station relaunched as "FOX Eastern Carolina" on January 28th, 2008 with a 10pm newscast produced by WCTI.The station made local headlines with its difficulties in transmitting

April 18 2006 , it was announced that WFXI/WYDO's digital subchannel DT2 would affiliate with the newMyNetworkTV Television Network.
