Nugaal ( _so. Nugaal) is one of the smaller administrative regions ("gobol") of
Somalia . It is in the northeast of the country and its capital isGaroowe .Nugaal is bordered by
Ethiopia and the Somali regions ofSool to the west, Bari to the north, andMudug to the south, with theIndian Ocean to the east.The region is central to the area claimed by the government of
Puntland , which is seeking recognition as a federal government within a united Somalia.A major geographic feature of the Nugaal region is the Nugaal Valley, a large shallow
drainage basin , fed by the Nugaal andDheer seasonal rivers during the April-June rainy season.The main Somali clan family living in this region is the
Majeerteen sub-clan of theDarood . The region's population is estimated to be around 126,000 [http://www.fsausomali.org/uploads/Other/792.pdf] but some publications give a much highier figure.In December 2004, Nugaal was in the region affected by the
