- Acrefair
Acrefair is a village in the county borough of Wrexham,
Wales . It was formerly part of the ancient parish ofRuabon , and is located between the towns ofWrexham andLlangollen . It is close to the villages of Trefor,Cefn Mawr ,Ruabon and Plas Madoc.Parts of Acrefair have beautiful views across the River Dee and the Dee valley. Acrefair has two shops, a post office, a chemist and a fish and chip shop. Most of these facilities are located in the newer part of Acrefair which is closer to the more recent village of Plas Madoc than the original village. It boasts many buildings built from Ruabon brick, including several chapels which are now closed and converted.
It was home to the
Monsanto chemical works, which has produced chemicals since beforeWorld War II . The site was the American company's first venture inEurope . Monsanto later operated the site as FlexSys, one of their subsidiaries.Coal, clay and iron were also worked in the area during its industrial period.
Another US company, Air Products, also have a large manufacturing facility in Acrefair where 'Cold Boxes' and HP/LP columns used in the chemical industry are produced. These are transported from the factory to Ellesmere Port by heavy haulage vehicles, often with a Police Escort of up to five cars or motorbikes due to the size and weight of the loads.
Acrefair railway station was formerly a station on the Ruabon to Barmouth line. It closed to passengers on Monday 18 January 1965 as part of theBeeching Axe .
