Buffalo Calf Road Woman

Buffalo Calf Road Woman

Buffalo Calf Road Woman was a Northern Cheyenne woman who was the sister of a male Native American fighter who was involved in the Battle of Rosebud. The battle had been going poorly, and the Cheyenne and Sioux, who were allied under the leadership of Crazy Horse, had been retreating, leaving her wounded brother, Chief Comes in Sight, on the battlefield, when she suddenly rode out into the battlefield at full speed and grabbed her brother, carrying him to safety. This courageous rescue on her part caused the Cheyenne to rally and to defeat their enemy, General George Crook. She died of malaria in 1878.

The Cheyenne referred to the Battle of Rosebud as "The Fight Where the Girl Saved Her Brother". Buffalo Calf Road Woman is also documented as having fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn.

She fought alongside her husband, Black Coyote. Her name is also given as Brave Woman.
