Chesapeake (tribe)

The Chesapeake Tribe of Southeastern Virginia was believed to be a Native American Indian tribe that would not become part of the Powhatan Confederacy.

They were believed to have been annihilated in the years just prior to the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia by English colonists--that is, May 14, 1607.

It has been theorized that Powhatan, after consultation with his medicine man, believed that the Chesapeake Indians (aka Chesepian) would be a threat. He ordered the destruction of the tribe; none survived.

Some have speculated that the "Lost Colonists" from Roanoke Island may have emigrated and lived among the Chesapeake tribe before being destroyed by Powhatan.

There are two books by Helen Rountree which deal with the Native Americans in Virginia during pre-colonial times.
