coor =Cebu Normal University was established in 1915 as a provincial normal school, a branch of the
Philippine Normal School . It became an independent institution in 1924, a chartered college in 1976, and a university in 1998. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Cebu, with the enviable reputation of having produced a great many outstanding educators and public figures.CNU has 3 campuses, the Main Campus in Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City and two extension campuses in Medellin and Balamban.
Overview
Established in 1915, the school itself has always been synonymous with teaching. Starting as an adjunct to the then Cebu Provincial High School, the school has come a long way and has surpassed the tests of time.
It was once used as headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army, using its rooms as prison cells and “torture chambers”. As the years progressed the school has added or phased out courses. The 80’s to the 90’s era saw a rapid increase in the school’s population, thus causing new buildings to be built. These structures now house the three big colleges of the school: College of Teacher Education(CTE), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS, and the College of Nursing(CN), as well as the museum, the Integrated Laboratory School(ILS), the Graduate School(GS) and Balay Alumni.
On June 27, 1998, the school (then called Cebu State College) attained a university status and was named Cebu Normal University (CNU) under Senate Bill 2320 signed by former Pres.
Fidel V. Ramos .CNU has produced topnotchers in the nursing board exam and in the teacher’s board. Part of the university’s academic strength lies on its strong research, planning, and development units and the graduate school.
On 2008, CNU has already two extension colleges in
Medellin andBalamban , still here in Cebu.CNU during World War II
The CNU campus was used as headquarters of the dreaded
Kempetai or Military Police of theJapanese Imperial Army during the second World War. Because of this, the basement of the administration building of CNU have been rumored to have ghosts of those who are killed by the Japanese.Famous Alumni
Famous CNU alumni include the late Philippine Undersecretary of Education Narciso Albarracin, Mr. Hilario Davide Sr., National Model Filipino awardee, and the late Senate President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
Marcelo Fernan . From the entertainment industry, Cebuana singerSheryn Regis graduated in CNU with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, Major in English. Regis was recognized by the university as an outstanding alumna for her recent accolades as a singer.2008's Commendable Students
The CNU also boasts of a roster of the most influential and socially relevant students in the whole country. One of which is Ma.
Socorro V. Cadampog, honored and recognized by the City ofTalisay for her efforts as an environmentalist and for voicing out for Human and Children's Rights. Currently a Nursing student, Ms. Cadampog is working as a volunteer dedicated to providing education to the underpriviledged youth. She has also been awarded as a Model Youth of Cebu three times in a row for exemplary volunteer work and scholastic achievements.External Links
