Hangeul : 한국기술교육대학교,Hanja : 韓國技術敎育大學校) is a university inCheonan ,South Chungcheong ,South Korea . The university was opened in 1992 and its current president is Dr. Byung-suk Chung. The Korea University of Technology and Education (abbreviated KUT) is a government-supported university specializing in teaching practical engineering and HRD. KUT has two campuses (Main and 2nd) and both are in Cheonan City, South Korea, but 15km apart from each other: Most of the undergraduate and graduate education is conducted on the Main campus, whereas the 2nd campus offers continuing education for vocational school instructors and field engineers. KUT is highly regarded for its 100% graduate career placement (#1 in Korea) for 13 consecutive years, which is the result of its practical engineering program. In 2007, freshman profile was within top 15~20% in Korean SAT scores.
History
KUT was founded in 1991 with government funding (Ministry of Labor), initially for fostering vocational school instructors. Since then, its role has expanded to include educating engineers and HRD specialists to qualify in both practical skills and teaching ability. In 1998, to re-educate vocational school instructors and field engineers, KUT established an auxiliary institute, the Human Resources Development Institute (HRDI), with government aid. At this institute, over 11,000 trainees participated in one week to 6 month program in new technology and teaching methods in 2007. To develop cooperation and to close the technology gap between major and small-and-medium sized industries, KUT founded the KUT-Samsung Advanced Electronics Technology Education Center in 2004. At this center, over 1,900 engineers from Samsung Electronics and its affiliates have participated in one to two week program in 2007.
Academics
KUT has 8 engineering departments and 1 Industrial Management department. Each department has masters and doctoral courses. Currently, 3,600 undergraduate students and 550 graduate school students are enrolled.
Educational Features
Educational mission for KUT is to provide students with the best education in practical engineering and HRD. In order to achieve the mission, KUT has distinctive programs to enhance students' practical abilities. KUT faculty members are required to have at least 3 years of industry or field experience. Undergraduate coursework is consist of 50% theory-based lecture and 50% lab-based practice. Beginning the sophomore year, each student is guided by an academic adviser in a lab with juniors and seniors. Also, students has to complete an industry internship course as a graduation requirement. The university's expenditure on each student is nearly 4 times that of tuition. This ratio has ranked the second highest national wide in 2007. KUT has a strict graduation qualification system. Every student has to complete a graduation project and also has to acquire a national technical license as a graduation requirement.
Rankings and Reputation
The Korea Council for University Education (KCUE), which conducts engineering accreditation every five years, ranked KUT in the 'best group' of universities in Korea in the fields of Mechanical and IT Engineering in 2006 and in 2007. In 2007, in Joong-Ang Daily's* University Evaluation, KUT ranked highly in many evaluation categories, such as:
*Educational Atmosphere & Funding (National Rank #5)
*Lab-based Practice Programs (National Rank #2)
*Education Expense Return (National Rank #2)
