- Locris
Locris (Greek, Modern: polytonic|Λοκρίδα Lokrida, Ancient: polytonic|Λοκρίς Lokris) was a region of
ancient Greece , the homeland of theLocrians , made up of two districts.Opuntian Locris or Eastern Locris was on the mainland coast stretching fromThermopylae toLarymna , oppositeEuboea , whileOzolian Locris or Western Locris was on the northern coast of theCorinthian Gulf betweenNaupactus andCrisa , going inland up theAmphissa valley.Locris is not to be confused with Epizephyrian Locris, a colony founded by the Locrians in Calabria.
Ancient Locris
The territory of the Locrians was divided into two by Doris and
Phocis , perhaps due to an early invasion of a contiguous Locrian state. This fact, combined with the region's infertility, meant that the Locrians tended to be dominated by their neighbours, and played little part in Greek history. Opuntian Locris was named after its maincity , Opus. The main cities of Ozolian Locris were Amphissa andNaupactus which was itsseaport . Modern Lokrida (Opuntian Locris) is located in a province in the southeastern part of the
Fthiotis prefecture. Its modern seat isAtalanti . It is bounded by theViotia prefecture to the south,Fokida prefecture to the southwest and theFthiotis province to the northwest. The Ozolian Locris is today known commonly asNafpaktia and also the southern part ofFokida as part of theDorida province.External links
