Officially the name Woodbine comes from that of a local cottage which was home to a prominent local family, the Paytens, from the 1870s to the 1960s. It has also been suggested that, during a Council argument about the name of the suburb, a disgruntled councillor suggested it be named after the
cigarette s of his chain-smoking colleagues, and it was from this off-the-cuff remark that serious consideration was given to the name Woodbine. Tharawal people [Liston, C: "The Dharawal and Gandangara in colonial Campbelltown, New South Wales, 1788-1830", article in Aboriginal History, vol.12, 1988: p.48-62.] [cite web | url= http://www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/upload/fxwyn53436/Cultural.pdf | title=Campbelltown's Environment| publisher=Campbelltown City Council | accessdate=2008-03-03 ] . The surrounding land still contains reminders of their past lives in rock engravings, cave painting s, axe grinding grooves and shellmidden s. A local park "Kanbyugal Reserve" is named after a Tharawal leader who met with explorerGeorge Caley in the area in the early 1800s [cite web | url= http://www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/default.asp?iDocID=2104&iNavCatID=322&iSubCatID=1393 | title=History of Woodbine| publisher=Campbelltown City Council | accessdate=2007-12-21 ] .British settlers began moving into the area in the early 1800s, establishing farms and orchards in the area. By the 1970s, the expanding Sydney was large enough for developers to look at the area around Campbelltown. After Council decided on the name, developers such as
Landcom began building and the first residents moved in in 1976.People
