- Forest Schools
A Forest School is a form of
outdoor education that uses woods and forests in a deliberate way as a means to build independence andself-esteem in young children.Originally a concept developed in Denmark for pre-school children (under seven years) it stemmed from their småbørnspædagogik, or Early Years Education.Children attending Forest Schools were arriving at school with strong social skills, the ability to work in groups effectively, and generally children had high self-esteem and confidence in their own capabilities. All these attributes proved to be an effective foundation that raised academic achievements.Forest Schools then moved into
Wisconsin in 1927 when the first thought and idea for a school forest was from a man named Wakelin McNeel who was a 4-H leader and wanted something that was for both land and the youth. The first school forest in the United States were in Crandon, Laona, and Wabeno which are all in Wisconsin. This ethos was introduced to the UK during the 1990’s and has been taken on as an effective educational tool in a variety of settings. The experience is fun and child led. Children roll in the leaves, splash about in puddles, and learn about flora and fauna through personal contact. By setting children small manageable tasks and giving genuine praise, children are given a good foundation for future learning. The combination of freedom and responsibility has been particularly beneficial to children who suffer from lack of confidence or whose behaviour is challenging. With high adult:child ratios children can safely experience activities that are often prohibited, such as climbing trees or lighting fires. The programme allows children to grow in confidence and independence and extend their abilities.
Ideally children should attend Forest School sessions weekly, throughout the year, experiencing all weathers and the changing seasons.
