- Po' Girl
Po' Girl is a Canadian acoustic group whose style derives from jazz, folk, and country with a tinge of punk attitude. The style of music they perform is called "urban roots." Once based in
Vancouver they are now back in the Eastern cities of Toronto and Montreal. The group consists of Allison Russell (singer/multi-instrumentalist), Awna Teixeira (singer/multi-instrumentalist), Benny Sidelinger (multi-instrumentalist).Po' Girl released their self-titled debut album in 2003. Po' Girl's music has been compared with those of
Tracy Chapman ,Ani DiFranco ,Natalie Merchant , andNorah Jones . It showcases melodies from instruments as diverse as banjo, clarinet, harmonica, and fiddle.In 2004, Po' Girl recorded and released their second album, "Vagabond Lullabies", with the help of friend musicians who included Roey Shemesh on bass and John Raham and Shelley Okepnak on drums.
