The film, directed by Michael Gordon, is consideredfilm noir .Leopold Kroner (Fritz Leiber), formerly of Colby Enterprises, is released after five years in prison for embezzlement. Andrew Colby (Price), claiming that Kroner has threatened him, hires lawyer Bob Regan as a personal bodyguard.
Later, Regan shoots Kroner when appears to be trying to kill his boss but then later begins to suspect that Colby set him up to kill the man.
Reaction
Reviews for the
black-and-white film were positive when released. William Bendix was singled out by a number of reviews for his performance as a smart but unsympathetic cop that investigates the killing. Vincent Price as the elegant but sinister industrialist was also praised.Featured cast
