It has 391 inpatient beds, and nearly 400 physicians representing 41 specialties. Twenty-four-hour emergency care is available on site at the verified level II trauma center,[1] and its North Flight emergency medical service provides helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, and ground ambulance services throughout Northern Michigan.
Munson Medical Center is named in honor of Dr. James Munson (1848–1929), the first director of the Traverse City Psychiatric Hospital (which closed in 1989); Dr. Munson served in this capacity from the 1880s until 1925. Today, Munson Medical Center repeatedly ranks among the Top 100 Hospitals by Solucient, which maintains the nation's largest health care database. During the past few years the hospital has undergone many renovations.
