- Schizophyllan
Schizophyllan is a neutral extracellular
polysaccharide produced by the fungus "Schizophyllan commune ", consisting of a 1,3-β-D-linked backbone of glucose residues with 1,6-β-D-glucosyl side groups. The non-degraded polysaccharide has a molecular weight of the order 106 Da. A chemically analogous polysaccharide, scleroglucan, is formed by the fungus "Sclerotium rolfsii ". Both polysaccharides share the chemical structure of the backbone withcurdlan . It is known for several things, including its ability to stimulate the immune system, carry metals in water, aid in delivering drugs, and use in some nanofibers.cite journal | author = Kony, David B.; Damm, Wolfgang; Stoll, Serge; Van Gunsteren, Wilfred F.; Hunenberger, Philippe H. | year = 2007 | title = Explicit-Solvent Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Polysaccharide Schizophyllan in Water | journal = Biophysical Journal | volume = 93 | issue = 2 | pages = 442 | doi = 10.1529/biophysj.106.086116 | url = http://www.biophysj.org/cgi/content/abstract/93/2/442 | pmid = 17237195]References
