Brunei Darussalam . To gain admission to the school, students must earn straight As in their end of Primary School level exams. Though most students enter the school at form 1 level, occasionally older higher level students are allowed entry, subject to proper circumstances (local students returning from overseas, students with excellent results for their O-levels). The first science school intake was in 1978.The school is renowned throughout the region for its excellent
O-level and A-level results; former Maktab Sains students can be found in universities all over the world including Imperial College, Oxbridge and the Ivy League. The Bruneian government has been very generous in its provision of funding for students to study abroad through several scholarships. The school has a proud tradition in interschool competitions including speech, computing, hadrah, debate and maths competitions. In 2004, the school choir team managed to win the interschool choir competition; after not being allowed to join the competition for about ten years. Though the schools sports teams have not been equally prominent in national competitions, the school's basketball team has recently become a force at this level. During the early years in 1978-1980 the hockey teams and netball teams were very competitive and went to National competitons. The school has also been known to be active in extracurricullum activities including a drugs awareness team.
Many of Brunei's Royalty, were taught in Maktab Sains. The Crown-Princess of Brunei Darussalam,
Pengiran Anak Sarah was educated there where she graduated in 2005.The School is located on the Jalan Muara road, in close proximity to two other secondary level schools- SMB and MTSSR. A few years ago, the Maktab Sains school building was in disuse due to structural concerns; instead students were taught lessons in buildings designated for use by Sekolah Menengah Rimba. However, the old school was refurbished and new buildings including a new auditorium were built on the grounds. In 2005, the school officially moved back to its original campus.
