Gregorio F. Zaide (
May 25 ,1907 -1986) was a Filipinohistorian and author.Early life and education
Zaide was born in
Pagsanjan , Laguna.He graduated as valedictorian of Laguna High School in (1926). He obtained his M.A. in (1931) from the
University of the Philippines and his A.B. and Ph.D. degrees in 1934 from theUniversity of Santo Tomas .Career
Zaide was the first Asian to win the
United Nations Study Award in 1957. He was a member ofInstituto Historico de la Independencia Americana ofArgentina andInstituto Panamericano de Geografia e Historia ofMexico . He was elected as President of thePhilippine Historical Association and served in this capacity for three terms. He was also an active member of theAmerican Historical Association based in (Washington, D.C. ).Zaide was awarded the prestigious
Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1968 by the Philippine government.He served as mayor of his hometown of Pagsanjan from 1971-1975.
Zaide's published works are periodically updated by his daughter, Sonia Zaide. An accomplished historian and writer, Sonia holds advanced degrees from
London School of Economics (LSE).
