Edgar Jadwin, C.E. (
August 7 ,1865 -March 2 ,1931 inHonesdale, Pennsylvania ) graduated first in theUnited States Military Academy class of 1890 and was commissioned in theU.S. Army Corps of Engineers . He served with engineer troops in 1891-1895 and waslieutenant colonel of the 3d U.S. Volunteer Engineers in theSpanish-American War . After serving as district engineer at the expanding ports ofLos Angeles andGalveston , he was selected by General Goethals as an assistant in the construction of thePanama Canal , on which he worked from 1907 to 1911. Jadwin served in 1911-1916 in the Office of the Chief of Engineers focusing onbridge and road matters. Upon the United States' entry intoWorld War I in 1917, he recruited the 15th Engineers, arailway construction regiment, and led it toFrance . He directed American construction andforestry work there for a year and received the Distinguished Service Medal. PresidentWoodrow Wilson appointed Jadwin to investigate conditions inPoland in 1919. In 1922-1924 Jadwin headed the Corps' Charleston District and Southeast Division. He then served two years as Assistant Chief of Engineers. AsChief of Engineers he sponsored the plan forMississippi River flood control that was adopted by theUnited States Congress in May 1928. Jadwin retired as a lieutenant general,August 7 ,1929 . He died in Gorgas Hospital in thePanama Canal Zone onMarch 2 ,1931 , and was buried inArlington National Cemetery with full military honors.ee also
