Tranøy is a municipality in the county of Troms,
Norway .Tranøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt ). Two other municipalities were later separated from it:Dyrøy (1886) andSørreisa (1886).The municipality is situated on the southern coast of the island
Senja . The municipal centre is atVangsvik in the east.Stonglandseidet in the west is another centre. The now abandoned island ofTranøya , with its 18th century wooden church, used to be the centre of activities. FromTranøybotn it is only a short walk to theÅnderdalen National Park , with varied landscapes within a very limited area, including deep pine forests. The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the small island
Tranøya (Norse "Tranøy"), since the first church was built there. The first element is "trana" f 'common crane ', the last element is "øy" f 'island'.Until 1909 the name was written "Tranø".
