Gratangen is a municipality in the county of Troms,
Norway .Gratangen was separated from
Ibestad July 1, 1926.It was the site of the
Battle of Gratangen , one of the first battles between theGerman 3rd Mountain Division underEduard Dietl and theNorwegian 6th Division under GeneralCarl Gustav Fleischer after the German invasion of Norway April 9th 1940.The name
The municipality is named after the fjord Gratangen (Norse "Grjótangr"). The first element is "grjót" n 'stone', the last element is "angr" m 'fjord'.
