Demographics
As of 2001 Indiacensus [GR|India] , Rairangpur had a population of 21,682. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Rairangpur has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 65%. In Rairangpur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.Economy
Rairangpur acts as a liaison centre between Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, Durgapur in West Bengal and the Iron Ore Mines in Gorumahisani, Badampahar and Suleipat. The steel factories of tata and near by rely partly on the Iron Ores extracted from these mines. There is special train from Jamshedpur to Badampahar via Rairangpur.
Rairangpur is surrounded by Hills and most of them are rich in iron ore mineral. The first iron ore mines of Asia is in Gorumahisani, Suleipat and Badampahar (mother mines of Tata Steel) is located here. The first ever trial for setting up of a Ferro Vanadium Plant was made by Mayurbhanj Maharaja during pre-independence days. Currently thousands of Tonnes of Iron Ore is exported to out-side the State and for export on daily basis. The local population consist of Tribals. Rairangpur has the oldest and the biggest Sal Oil Extraction Plant which is closed. Sal seed is locally collected from the forest and tribals of this area rely for their livelihood on this collection of Sal Seeds. There is one industrial estate and some old industries operating in this area. It has grate potential of industrialisation.
Politics
Current MLA from Rairangpur Assembly Constituency is Droupadi Murmu of BJP, who won the seat in State elections in 2004 and also in 2000. Previous MLAs from this seat were Laxman Majhi of INC in 1995, Chaitanya Prasad Majhi JD in 1990, Bhabendra Nath Majhi of INC in 1985, Sidhalal Murmu of INC(I) in 1980, and Arjun Majhi of JNP in 1977.
