Herøy is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway.

Herøy was separated from Alstahaug in 1862. Nordvik was separated from Herøy July 1, 1917.

The name

The municipality is named after the islands Søndre og Nordre Herøya (Norse "Herøyjar"). The first element is "herr" m 'army' (here in the sense "skipaherr" n 'military fleet'), the last element is the plural form of "øy" f 'island'. The sound between the islands was probably a meeting place for the leidang fleet of the district.

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1987). It shows three oars.
