Alstahaug in 1862.Nordvik was separated from Herøy July 1, 1917.The name
The municipality is named after the islands Søndre og Nordre Herøya (Norse "Herøyjar"). The first element is "herr" m 'army' (here in the sense "skipaherr" n 'military fleet'), the last element is the plural form of "øy" f 'island'. The sound between the islands was probably a meeting place for the
