The municipality is named after
Frænfjorden (Old Norse "Fræni"). The meaning of the name is unknown (it might be derived from "frænn" 'bright, shiny').Until 1918 the name was written "Frænen". (And before 1865 the parish and municipality was named "Vaagø".)
