The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Eide (
Old Norse "Eið"), since the first church was built there (in 1869). The name is identical with the word "eið" n 'isthmus , neck of land'.Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1982). It shows three swimming swans (
