Following the departure of two band members, Siouxsie & the Banshees regrouped and redirected their sound for "Kaleidoscope", their third album. Veering from a punkish, more guitar-oriented sound, the Banshees (reduced to a trio) began their experimentation with electronic soundscapes and Middle Eastern exotica. This album also marks the debut of the guitarist John McGeoch from Magazine and the brand new drummer and composer Budgie from The Slits, who would continue to record with the band throughout their remaining history. Polydor Records released this album in the UK in 1980. The record hit #5 in the UK charts ( it's the highest position the band reached in the albums charts)."Kaleidoscope" was remastered as a single disc digipack in May, 2006 with unreleased material in the bonus.

The Cure leader Robert Smith named that record to Steve Sutherland in 1985 to describe "The Head on the Door": "It reminds me of the "Kaleidoscope" album, the idea of having lots of different sounding things, different colors." [ "A suitable case of treatment" interview of Robert Smith by Steve Sutherland in "Melody Maker" 17 August 1985 ]

Santogold was highly infuenced by the Banshee track "Red Light" to compose and record "My Superman" on her first album. The tune and the production are so close on these two songs that a copyright issue might take place in the future.
