Eric Quinn Metcalf (born January 23, 1968 in Seattle, Washington) is a former American football running back and wide receiver in the National Football League who played for the Browns, Falcons, Chargers, Cardinals, Panthers, Redskins and Packers. He was a three-time Pro Bowler for Browns and the Chargers.

High school career

He is the son of former NFL player Terry Metcalf. He attended Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia. In high school Metcalf competed in both football and track and field. He excelled in the long jump and still has the #7 distance ever posted indoors by a US high schooler with a jump of 25' 5 1/4" (7.75m).

College career

Eric attended the University of Texas where he was an All Southwest Conference selection three times.

Pro career

A multi-talented player, Metcalf excelled at offense and as a returner on special teams. In his second NFL season, he led the league in kickoff return yards (1,052) and return touchdowns (2). He also led the NFL in punt return touchdowns in 4 different seasons(1993-1995, 1997). Overall, Metcalf finished his career with 2,392 rushing yards, 541 receptions for 5,572 yards, 3,453 punt return yards, and 5,813 yards returning kickoffs. This gave him a total of 17,230 all-purpose yards, ranking him among the NFL's top 10 in that category at the time of his retirement. He also scored 55 touchdowns(12 rushing, 31 receiving, 10 punt returns, 2 kickoff returns). His 12 returned-kick touchdowns are the second most in NFL history behind Brian Mitchell, of which his 10 punt return touchdowns are an NFL record. He is the only player ever to have 7,000+ yards on offense and 7000+ yards on kickoff/punt returns.Fact|date=February 2007

Metcalf was exchanged along with two first round & one second round draft picks by San Diego Chargers to Arizona Cardinals for moving one spot in the 1998 NFL Draft to pick quarterback Ryan Leaf.

After football

Metcalf currently coaches football at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington. In the 2005-2006 season he helped lead the team to the state semi-finals. He also started an elite high school track & field club called Seatown Express.
