The place where San Carlos is, was discovered by Captain Francisco Nuñez Pedroso, and it was founded the 14th of August of 1786.
Is 3 hours away from the capital, Medellín and has an excellent road.

The municipal area is 702 km². It has 3 corregimientos,
El Jordán ,Puerto Garzas , andSamaná del Norte .It has one of the most beautiful woods in Colombia, and has many species of plants and animals. It also have many rivers and waterfalls.
