Hawaiian lava sledding

Hawaiian lava sledding (Hawaiian: heokinae hōlua, "sled surfing") is a traditional sport of Native Hawaiians. Similar to wave surfing, heokinae hōlua involves the use of a narrow convert|12|ft|m|sing=on long, 6 inch wide wooden sled ("papa hōlua") made from fireproof native wood like kauila or okinaōhiokinaa. The sled is used standing up, lying down, or kneeling, to ride down man-made or naturally occurring courses of rock, often reaching speeds of convert|50|mi/h|km/h|abbr=on or greater. In the past, Hawaiian lava sledding was considered both a sport and a religious ritual for honoring the gods.
