Romeyn de Hooghe (bapt.
September 10 ,1645 ,Amsterdam –June 10 ,1708 ,Haarlem ) was an important and prolific late DutchBaroque engraver andcaricaturist .De Hooghe was skilled as an
etcher , draughtsman, painter, sculptor andmedalist . He is best known for politicalcaricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and hisillustration s can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. The "Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren" (1735) was a well knownemblem book and sourcebook forclassical mythology and itsiconography .ources
