Hochburg

The Hochburg ("high castle") is a castle near Emmendingen in southwest Germany.

"Brief History:"

* 11th century — founded probably by Dietrich von Hachberg

* 1127 — first mentioned in an official document

* 1553-1577 — fortifications are completely remodeled

* Early 17th century — enhancement of the fortifications with 7 bastions

* 1634-1636 — destroyed by catholic forces in the Thirty Years' War.

* 1660-1678 — reconstruction and modernization

* 1681 — voluntary destruction to prevent an attack by French forces

* 1684 — fire destroys the upper part

* 1688 — Occupation and subsequent demolition by troops of Louis XIV

Today, the Hochburg is still a ruin.
