Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue

Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue

Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue (March 12 1753 – June 16 1841) was a British peer, the son of Matthew Fortescue, 2nd Baron Fortescue.

He married Hester Grenville (1767–1847), daughter of George Grenville, on 10 May 1782. They had four children:

*Lady Hester Fortescue (d. 1873), married Peter King, 7th Baron King and had issue.
*Hugh Fortescue, 2nd Earl Fortescue (1783–1861)
*Captain George Mathew Fortescue (1791–1877), married Lady Louisa Ryder, daughter of Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby and had issue.
*Lady Elizabeth Fortescue (1801–1867), married William Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon and had issue.

Discrepancy

There is evidence that the 1st Earl Fortescue had 9 children with Hester Grenville. The complete list is
* Hugh Fortescue, 2nd Earl Fortescue, P.C. (1783–1861)
* Capt. Hon. George Matthew Fortescue (d. 1874)
* Rev. Hon. John Fortescue (1796–1869)
* Lady Hester Fortescue (d. 1873)
* Lady Catherine Fortescue (d. 1854)
* Lady Anne Fortescue (d. 1864)
* Lady Mary Fortescue (fourth daughter, and born 15 September 1792 at Filleigh, Devon. Married 15 February 1823 to Sir James Hamlyn Williams of Edwinsford, Carms., and Clovelly, Devon. Died 12 August 1874 in London and buried at Talley, Carms., in the family vault at her special request)
* Lady Eleanor Fortescue (d. 1847)
* Lady Elizabeth Fortescue (d. 1867)

These data were obtained from [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~conqueror/genealogy_html/i381.html#i15037] . These data need to be verified. Lady Anne is confirmed (or rather reinforced) by the book "Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula" by Paul Nahin.
