Sarai (tribe)

The Sarai are Jat clan found in Punjab, India and Punjab, Pakistan.

They are found in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Jalandhar and Sialkot, as well on the upper and middle Sutlej.

History and origin

They claim descent from Sarai, a Bhatti Rajput who settled in Hafizabad District in the 15th century. They then spread to Sialkot and Gurdaspur.[1]

According to some traditions, they are descended from the Sehrai Rajputs, who ruled Alor in Sindh.

In the 19th Century, members of the tribe in Sialkot were known as Shaikhs, as they headed the Sultani sect.

Religion

The Sarai are Sikh in India, and Muslim in Pakistan.
