The Designers
Aimee Wolk was raised in Huntsville, Alabama. Her interest for fashion started at an early age, and in high school she designed and made many of her own clothes. In 1999, Wolk enrolled in Auburn University's design program. She graduated in 2003 with a BS in Apparel Merchandising Design and Production Management. In the fall of 2009, Wolk married Jonathan Mars in her hometown of Huntsville, Ala. Wolk wore a self-designed, haute couture, aubergine-colored gown that incorporated vintage elements.
Sara Jordan, from Apopka, Florida, enrolled in Auburn University in 2000. Jordan gained an interest in fashion early in life. Influenced by her mother's art studio, Jordan began sketching fashion designs in middle school. Like Wolk, she graduated with a BS in Apparel Merchandising Design and Production Management in 2004.
The designers initially met at in an Auburn University sewing lab in 2001. Although they were at the same college, the two did not connect again until a chance encounter in Manhattan in 2005. After interning at locations such as Donna Karan, Dara Lamb, Rebecca Taylor and Tibi, the designers decided to create their own line. The Brand
The collection is inspired by the lives of the designers' grandmothers, Sara Claire Peacock and Esther Wolk. In each season, the designers use events from their grandmothers lives as inspiration for the design. Each collection features vintage elements, such as recycled fabrics or vintage buttons, as well as a gold top-stitch. Many of the styles are reminiscent of mid-20th century Hollywood, and embody starlets like Veronica Lake and Bette Davis. The first collection, "Ruffles & Red Lipstick" (SS 2009) incorporated vintage oxford shirts, followed by vintage khaki and lace elements in FS09 "Stars fell on Alabama" collection, and vintage buttons in the SS10 "Valley of the Belles" collection.[1]
In 2009, the company won the fashion division of "The Design Green Project" for their incorporation of recycled materials into the SS09 clothing.[2] Later that year, the company also won the "Most Entertaining" category for the 2009 Tulips and Pansies - The Headdress Affair.[3]References
