History

According to a Urdu book titled Tareekh-e-Jhelum by writer Anjum Sultan Shahbaz:

“A fanciful Water Tank was constructed by the orders of Sultan Jalal Khan Ghakhar Admal which is located within the locality of Village Karonta District Jhelum at the distance of 5 miles from Lehrri. The said Sultan, in the era of Mughal King Akbar, was a powerful ruler in the sixteenth century. Adjacent to the Tank, on southern side, remnants of a Caravan Sirai (temporary abode) still can be seen in addition to a mosque, still in good position. There also lies a shrine of a saint nearby it upon which a doomed structure stands. The name of the holly saint is told as Jahan Shah Badshah. Offerings are paid at the shrine weekly on each Thursday. Historical mosque and the shrine are renovated annually because a local village fair is celebrated here on each year where a large number of temporary shops are allowed to set up by levying a customary tax from shopkeepers to be expensed on the repairings of mosque and the shrine.

The tank is called “Sar” which has been constructed by restricting a rainy ravine brook. A level tract of land on its northern side looks very graceful and conducive place. Actually this place had been the camping ground of Ghakkhar chiefs during their travel to Lahore and Delhi. This spot was the centre of Rohtas and Hathiyah to be camped by the caravans. Arrangement of village fair on this place is hardly a fifty years back story. A famous phrase “Bole Kamali Sar Jalali” is the mention of same Tank which means that Kamal Khan Ghakkhar was firm to his undertakings but this tank was constructed by Jalal Khan.

Sultan Jalal Khan although had made this place only as a camping ground but it was promoted as a large town with the passage of time which later on progressed more with the efforts of Sultan Murad Qulli Khan, a grandson of the above said Sultan, who also appointed his deputy to monitor the Tappa Pabbi. Additionally, a marvelous palace was raised on its southern side by a witty and gorgeous wife of his son Sultan Allah Dad Khan; ruined walls of it with innumerable shot-spots mentioning some fierce fight can still be seen.

The tank is measured as 300 yards in length and 200 yards width with immense depth. Tapering stairs descend on each side. It is told that the bottom of this pond was prepared from brass. Now this pond has been filled by ravine brook fetched-mud although some stairs can still be seen. We can still meet the old people in the village who had the opportunity to witness twenty four downstairs. Almost a century ago, this pond has been listed with Government’s Department of Archaeology and a permanent Security Guard has been appointed for its security and look after and excavation work was initiated but later on, ignored for unknown reasons. This place had been a Police Station of Sarkar Khalsa in the reign of Ranjeet Singh that is why this place has been ruined by them as a token of their blinded measures. For this reason inhabitants, leaving this place, dispersed here and there.”
